Responsible Officer Requirements
The Medical Profession (Responsible Officers) Regulations 2010 provides that each listed organisation must
nominate/appoint a Responsible Officer (this will be a senior doctor - consultant level or GP).
Here is a summary of a Responsible Officer's duties:
To make recommendations to the General Council about medical practitioners' fitness to practise.
The responsible officer will ensure that regular appraisals are carried out.
The appraisals can be carried out by another doctor (they don't have to be a consultant).
Establish procedures where 'concerns' about a doctor exist.
When a doctor joins an organisation the responsible officer will ensure they have adequate experience and
qualification for their placements.
Ensure systems are in place with regard to references, identification and maintenance of records.
The MAAR Gateway Responsible Officer will provide the above services for your organisation.
